The Allied Masonic Degrees: Discover the Missing Chapters of Your Masonic Journey
A Journey of Discovery Beyond the Familiar
Every Freemason knows that their Masonic journey is one of continual discovery. From the lessons of the Craft to the traditions of the Mark and the Holy Royal Arch, each new experience adds another dimension to our understanding of Freemasonry.
But have you ever wondered whether there is more to the stories you already know?
Perhaps certain characters, places or events have left you curious. Perhaps you have encountered something in one Order that seemed to echo a lesson or symbol from another. What if some of those familiar stories could be viewed from an entirely different perspective?
This is part of the fascination of the Allied Masonic Degrees (AMD), an Order that brings together five distinct and captivating ceremonies, each offering something different to the inquisitive Freemason.
Their connections with the wider Masonic tradition can be surprising, intriguing and, at times, illuminating. We shall leave you to discover precisely how!
A History Built on Preserving Masonic Tradition
The origins of the Allied Masonic Degrees can be traced to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when numerous additional degrees were practised throughout England, often under the authority of Lodges warranted by the 'Antients'.
Following the union of the two Grand Lodges in 1813, many of these ceremonies gradually became established within separate Masonic Orders. Others remained independently practised, their continued existence dependent upon dedicated groups of Brethren.
To preserve these historic ceremonies, the Grand Council of the Allied Masonic Degrees was established in 1879, bringing together degrees that might otherwise have been lost.
The Order originally comprised four degrees, with Grand Tilers of Solomon joining during the following years. Other ceremonies also came under Grand Council's authority before eventually becoming associated with separate governing bodies.
By 1931, the Order had assumed the familiar structure of five degrees that we enjoy today.
More than 145 years later, the Allied Masonic Degrees continues to preserve these traditions, offering an experience that is both historically fascinating and uniquely rewarding.
St Lawrence the Martyr
The degree through which every member begins his Allied journey. Drawing upon the courage and sacrifice of St Lawrence, it teaches powerful lessons in integrity, fortitude and remaining true to one's principles.
Knight of Constantinople
An entertaining and memorable ceremony set during the reign of Constantine the Great. Through moments of humour and reflection, it explores humility, equality and the importance of treating others with respect.
Grand Tilers of Solomon
A dramatic ceremony drawing upon the traditions surrounding King Solomon's Temple. It encourages careful judgement, vigilance and an appreciation of the responsibilities entrusted to us.
Red Cross of Babylon
Rich in historical and biblical tradition, this fascinating ceremony explores the importance of Truth, loyalty and fidelity. Its setting and characters may prove particularly intriguing to Brethren familiar with other Masonic Orders.
Grand High Priest
A solemn and impressive ceremony exploring ancient traditions of spiritual leadership, dedication and service. Its symbolism and teachings offer considerable opportunities for reflection.
THE CONNECTIONS YOU NEVER KNEW YOU WERE MISSING
One of the most rewarding aspects of the Allied Masonic Degrees is the opportunity to discover connections with the wider Masonic family.
Brethren familiar with the Craft, Mark Master Masons and the Holy Royal Arch may find new perspectives on traditions and narratives they have already encountered.
Those who have explored the Order of Royal and Select Masters or the Red Cross of Constantine may also recognise familiar historical figures, settings or themes that encourage further reflection.
The Order's history itself holds intriguing associations with the Order of the Secret Monitor and the Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests, both of which have connections with the development of the Allied Masonic Degrees.
These relationships illustrate the rich and interconnected heritage of Freemasonry.
Yet perhaps the greatest attraction lies not simply in knowing that these connections exist, but in discovering their significance.
WHAT MIGHT THE ALLIED MASONIC DEGREES REVEAL ABOUT THE CEREMONIES YOU HAVE ALREADY EXPERIENCED?
Which familiar characters might you encounter again? Which events might take on a different meaning? And which lessons might become clearer when viewed through another Masonic tradition?
Some connections may be immediately recognisable; others only become apparent through further experience and reflection.
We could tell you more, but that would take away part of the pleasure.
After all, some of the most rewarding discoveries in Freemasonry are those we make for ourselves.
More Than Ritual: A Fellowship Worth Joining
The Allied Masonic Degrees is not simply about discovering new ceremonies. It is also about enjoying everything that makes Freemasonry special.
Its Councils are renowned for their welcoming atmosphere, engaging ceremonies and genuine sense of friendship.
Following admission through St Lawrence the Martyr, members can experience the remaining four degrees in any order, often travelling between Councils to enjoy different ceremonies. This creates opportunities to visit new Masonic centres, renew friendships, meet Brethren from other Lodges and Orders, and broaden one's Masonic experience.
For those who enjoy ritual, history or exploring the deeper meanings of Freemasonry, the Allied Masonic Degrees offers considerable scope for continued learning.
For those who simply appreciate good company and Masonic fellowship, it offers just as much.
